Record types

  • A and AAAA: the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses for a name.
  • CNAME: an alias pointing at another name.
  • MX: mail servers, with priority (lower is tried first).
  • NS and SOA: the nameservers for the zone and its administrative settings.
  • TXT: free text, used for SPF, DMARC, domain verification.
  • CAA: which certificate authorities may issue certificates.
  • SRV: services such as SIP or XMPP with host and port.
  • DS and DNSKEY: DNSSEC keys.

About the TTL

The time to live is how long resolvers may cache the answer. A resolver that already cached it returns the remaining time, counting down, so the number you see can be lower than what is set at the DNS host.

Questions

Why do I get no records?
NOERROR with no answer means the name exists but has no record of that type. NXDOMAIN means the name does not exist at all.
