How accurate is IP location?
Location databases map blocks of addresses to places using registry records, provider data, network measurements and user corrections. Country accuracy is around 99 percent; city accuracy is much lower, often 50 to 80 percent within 50 km, and worse on mobile networks, which route customers through a few central sites.
The coordinates are the centre of the estimated area, often the middle of a city. They never point at a home.
Comparing with your device
On the main report you can share your device's own location to compare. That reading stays in your browser and is never sent to this site.
Questions
- My location is in the wrong city. Can I fix it?
- The database publishers accept corrections: DB-IP and MaxMind both have correction forms. Changes reach this site with the next monthly database download.
